I just added some fun performances to my events calendar. Halloween is my favorite time of year to perform! The doors are wide open to any type of idea or inspiration. I'm deciding whether I want to be a skeleton and dance to an apocalyptic song, or a deer and dance to a beautiful violin piece, or an angel, or wear the new purple costume I'm making that's not really Halloween-y at all. I suppose having too many ideas and too many possibilities is a good problem to have. Wish me luck!

I'm performing twice at Northwest Folklife this weekend! So exciting!
May 25, 2018 at 7:30 pm - Solo at Tribal Fusion Showcase at Folklife Festival. Details here. May 27, 2018 at 4 pm - Tahitian troupe performance at Folklife Festival with beginner's class of Te Fare o Tamatoa. Details here. Last night we celebrated 8 years of Skinny Dip shows! This monthly show has been successful because of the High Dive and the amazing belly dance community and its supporters. I'm eternally grateful to them and everyone who helped make the show possible (I'm looking at you, Sarah). We had a blast last night. Here's to another year of creativity!
This article is spot on. Everyone with body image issues would benefit from reading it!
I usually prefer dancing barefoot. When I started learning Hot Pot ITS style, that changed. There are lots of fast and furious spins, and I found that not only would my bare feet get a little sore from all that spinning, but my feet would "stick" to the floor a little which made it harder to spin fast enough. Thus began my search for the perfect dance footwear that would allow me to have enough "slipperiness" to spin easily, but not so much slipperiness that I would fall.
I noticed others in my class were just wearing socks, and some people folded the socks down so that their heel was exposed. I was afraid they would be too slippery. It turns out they were not too slippery and were very comfortable. Go figure. For some reason I thought I needed to try "proper" dance shoes because I thought they'd work even better than socks. I thought that's what we're supposed to wear for dancing, right? Unfortunately, I couldn't rent dance shoes, so I bought a lot of styles of flat dance shoes with leather soles and had mixed results. I have many friends who liked styles that I didn't like, so this is a very personal decision. I tried foot undies, but I found they would slip down toward my toes and not stay up (other people I know don't have this problem, but I don't know why. Magic?). I also didn't like the feel of something going between my toes. I also tried a few kinds of half shoes, but they squished my feet or went between my toes in an uncomfortable way. Someone gave me some dance sneakers, and I really liked them. I also liked ballet slippers and this is what I wear most of the time. I always wish dance shoes were wider. I don't think wide dance shoes exist. These dance socks look like a great cost-conscious option for anyone who likes the feel of wearing an athletic shoe but needs the slipperiness of a dance shoe. I think I'll just stick to socks. If only I could have all the money I spent on dance shoes back. Sigh. I used to have a sign in my dance studio that said, "Dance Like No One is Watching." After seeing the quote below, I took it down. I think he's right. What do you think?
